Susan founded Learner2Mentor
Hello! This is my story.
I decided to change careers from being an estate agent (working long hours and meeting deadlines) to working in childcare, so I had time for my children.
I started helping in a playgroup/nursery and discovered how much I enjoyed working with children. I decided to get a childcare qualification so that I could continue this career pathway.
The Level 1 Classroom Assistant course was recommended to me. This opened doors for me to continue my studying into supporting children in schools. I continued with the same tutor through Level 2 Teaching Assistant and Level 3 Special Educational Needs.
My tutor then asked if I would be interested in becoming a tutor for childcare courses. Who me? Stand up in front of adults? Community Education Lewisham provided the tutor training and I began my career in supporting adult students.
I continued to do this until I had the ambition to build my own company representing NCFE accredited courses. As adults, we have a lack of confidence to learn. We still have memories of our school life and reflect on the difficulties experienced at that time.
The self-esteem and confidence is lost and you become that young person starting school again for the first time. I know this feeling and I know the challenges at home that will distract learners from their hopes and aspirations.
My job is to listen, empathise and keep you focused on your goals; to give you time off to breath at times and refocus. Listening and talking to learners is the key to breaking down barriers to learning. Being respectful of their challenges and finding alternative approaches to their learning enable them to achieve and grow into the teaching tool they have aspired to.

My team of tutors have been picked because they have the same ethos and passion and as me to keep creating successful learners. Past learners keep in touch and I continue to support them, giving advice on interviews and the next steps in their career pathways.
Learners often return to enrol on higher-level qualifications or ‘bolt-on’ short courses to enhance their CVs and develop their skills to support children, young people and their families.
