About this course

This qualification is an introduction to the knowledge and understanding needed to work in a school or college environment. It can apply to the many varied roles that full and part time support staff may fulfil including: administrative roles, site support positions, technical roles and volunteers, as well as roles that work directly with children and young people in the learning environment.

This qualification covers from five years of age and up; however, information on early development has also been included to provide a base and to enhance learners understanding.

Please note that some knowledge of development in the early years has been included in the specification to enhance learner understanding.

The qualification is aimed at a range of learners who are thinking of working in a school or college setting, including young people, mature learners, learners with special educational needs, or where English is an additional language.

Progression

The Award shares mandatory units with the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and learning qualification, providing a direct progression route.

SWSC1

Understand Schools and Colleges as Organisations (H/616/5424)

This unit aims to prepare the learner for working in a school or college. It covers knowledge and understanding of the school and college organisational structure and function.

SWSC2

Understand Children and Young People’s Development (K/616/5425)

The aim of this unit is to explore holistic development. The unit will also consider effects on development and the role of the support worker to support the child and young person when concerns are raised about an individual’s development.

SWSC3

Understand Communication and Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults (T/616/5427)

This unit provides the knowledge and understanding that underpins effective communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults.

SWSC4

Understand Children and Young People’s Health and Safety (A/616/5428)

The aim of this unit is to raise an awareness of health and safety through knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures in a learning environment.

SWSC5

Safeguarding Children and Young People (F/616/5429)

This unit provides the knowledge and understanding required for safeguarding children and young people.

SWSC6

Understand Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with Children and Young People (T/616/5430)

The aim of this unit is to explore equality, diversity and inclusion. The unit will consider legislation, policy and procedure in schools and colleges to protect children and young people in a learning environment from the effects of discrimination.

Duration

90 GLH (Guided Learning Hours)

The qualification can usually be completed in six months or less. We have structured this course to be successfully completed in 10 weeks to specific requirements.

Structure

Six units.

The learner must achieve all six mandatory units at Level 2.

Learners do not need to be working or undertaking practical placements to take this qualification.
